The mood was festive
Thursday night as friends and admirers of Vancouver's Andrew
Owen and Cape Dorset's Kananginak Pootoogook gathered
to celebrate the official launch of their respective solo shows. With
Olympic fever at its height in Vancouver, visitors from as far away
as Toronto, New York and Seattle joined the festivities at MSG, contributing
to the special nature of the occasion.
During the introductory speeches, assistant director Robert Kardosh congratulated
Owen and Pootoogook on their exhibitions, noting the importance of their unique
contributions to contemporary art. Following the conclusion of the formal announcements,
Pootoogook, 75, surprised everyone by singing a song in Inuktitut that he wrote
himself, bringing tears to the eyes of many in the audience.
Also in attendance were former Kinngait Studio manager Jimmy Manning and Cape
Dorset artist Jamesie Pitseolak. Music was provided by jazz guitarist Budge Schachte,
whose excellent playing added to the success of the evening. A warm thank-you
to everyone who came out and helped to make this celebration a memorable event.
