50 years after the first experiments with Inuit printmaking
got underway in Cape Dorset, a new generation of northern
artists is looking to present-day cultural realities rather
than the romantic past for inspiration and subject matter.
This summer the Marion Scott Gallery proudly presents a
new portfolio of these unconventional contemporary images.
Published by Kinngait Studios, Cape Dorset's renowned printmaking
atelier, Nine Works by Seven Artists showcases the unique
expressions of a diverse and talented group of emerging
and mid-career artists.
Ranging in age from 39 to 56, all of the featured artists
belong to the first generation of Inuit never to have experienced
first hand the traditional nomadic life on the land. Each
has grown up instead within the context of the developing
modern community of Cape Dorset, with its multitude of
northern and southern Canadian cultural influences. As
a result, their images offer a unique set of perspectives
on the intersection between cultural tradition and contemporary
life in today's North.
Comprised mainly of lithographs and etchings with aquantint,
the collection features works by Arnaqu
Ashevak, Shuvinai
Ashoona, Siassie Kenneally, Kavavaow
Mannomee, Itee Pootoogook,
Ningeokuluk Teevee and Jutai
Toonoo. While
some of the artists have had their work featured in Cape
Dorset's annual fall print collections, this is the first
time that they are being featured as a group and given
their own platform.
