To celebrate the conclusion of his first solo exhibition in Vancouver, Les Ramsay will discuss the works in Velvet Morning Light, his process, inspiration, and more with fellow Vancouver artist Maggee Day.
Les Ramsay is a contemporary artist based in Vancouver, BC, where he draws inspiration from the serene coastal landscape. Raised in White Rock, Ramsay’s artistic journey began with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Emily Carr University. He also participated in a transformative six-month exchange program at the Universitat de Bellas Artes in Valencia, Spain, and in 2015, Ramsay attained a Master of Fine Arts in painting from Concordia University, further refining his craft and solidifying his unique artistic voice. His multidisciplinary approach combines elements of painting, sculpture, textile art, digital drawing, and the manipulation of recycled domestic objects, transforming them into thought-provoking works of art that challenge perceptions of beauty and utility.
Maggee Day is an artist and educator currently living in Vancouver, on the unceded land of the Coast Salish peoples, including the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh nations. Day works predominantly in the medium of oil paint. Through a process of reworking her surrounding visuals, she explores relationships between seeing and abstraction, perception and representation, as well as the material potential of paint. Day holds an MFA from Emily Carr University (Vancouver, 2020) and a BFA from OCAD University (Toronto, 2016). Day has exhibited across Canada and was awarded the 2018 Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant in painting. Recent exhibitions include Criss-Crossing at Equinox Gallery (2024), and This Must Be the Place at Mónica Reyes Gallery (2022).
