Birds Birds Birds: Prints

Marion Scott Gallery is pleased to present an online profile showcasing a diverse array of prints and graphic works depicting birds and avian creatures. Building upon the theme of our preceding profile focused on sculptural depictions of birds, the variety of compositions, representational choices, and artistic techniques employed in these paper-based works highlight the important, multi-faceted roles that birds serve within Inuit communities and cultures–including as vital sources of food and nutrition, figures in storytelling, oral history, and cosmology, and symbols of shifting weather patterns, such as the arrival of spring and warmer temperatures. Featuring artists who hail from differing groups and settlements throughout the Arctic region, this selection of works seeks to present a holistic, thought-provoking example of the representation of birds and human-bird relationships within Inuit print culture.
