Elisapee Ishulutaq: Remembering A Future, Too

The Marion Scott Gallery, in association with Studio PM, is pleased to announce an exhibition of new works by Elisapee Ishulutaq. Opening October 22 and continuing through November 26, Elisapee Ishulutaq: Remembering a Future, Too is the first exhibition in more than a decade to focus exclusively on the Pangnirtung-based artist’s work. The installation will include a new suite of large-format etchings detailing aspects of traditional Inuit life. The exhibition will also feature a recently completed series of monumental oilstick drawings recalling an important event in the community’s past.

In an artistic career that spans more than four decades, Pangnirtung’s Elisapee Ishulutaq has produced a singular body of work. Working in a range of two-dimensional media including drawing and various forms of print making, Ishulutaq represents the traditional Inuit way of life that she knew before the transition to permanent settlements in the 1960s and 1970s. Ishulutaq’s subjects include hunters pulling seals across the sea ice and kayakers paddling close to shore. Themes of Inuit mythology have also appeared in her work, as have images drawn from the world of modern technology and works portraying the effects of climate change in the North.
