Iconic: Saimaiyu Akesuk, Shuvinai Ashoona and Jamasee Pitseolak

June 7 – August 9, 2025
Opening Reception: Saturday, June 7, 2-4 PM
Robert Kardosh Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition featuring works by three of Nunavut’s most recognized artists, all of whom have been central to the gallery’s programme over the years. The first in a series of three exhibitions celebrating the gallery’s 50th year of operation, Iconic: Saimaiyu Akesuk, Shuvinai Ashoona and Jamasee Pitseolak brings together hand-coloured prints, drawings and sculptures. Saimaiyu Akesuk’s textured drawings of animals and insects are colourful and inventive, extending Kinngait’s tradition of graphic expression. Shuvinai Ashoona’s fantastical hand-coloured etchings picturing octopuses and people falling through space express her distinctive environmental vision, in which themes of darkness are mixed with humour and delight. Jamasee Pitseolak’s collaged stone sculptures depict non-traditional objects drawn from his memory and past, giving a new and unexpected dimension to Kinngait’s sculptural traditions.
