Outsiders: Saimaiyu Akesuk & Luke Anowtalik

November 19, 2022 – January 21, 2023

Marion Scott Gallery is pleased to present a two-person exhibition featuring drawings by Kinngait’s Saimaiyu Akesuk (b. 1988) and sculptures by Arviat’s Luke Anowtalik (1932-2006). Working within their respective artistic traditions while simultaneously transforming them, Akesuk and Anowtalik are each known for their highly idiosyncratic expressions. Akesuk’s colourful drawings of Arctic animals, some of which are striped or covered in dots, manage to be both whimsical and formally expressive, combining elements of abstraction and representation within the same image. Anowtalik’s complex assemblages carved from caribou antler, representing human, animal and bird forms joined together in transformational chains of being, are similarly wonderfully strange and joyous, expressing the Ihalmiut’s spiritual and material connection with the animal world.
