Plants, Objects, Landscapes: Drawings by Nicotye Samayualie

Marion Scott Gallery is pleased to announce Plants, Objects, Landscapes: Drawings by Nicotye Samayualie. The exhibition, Samayualie’s first with MSG, features 14 drawings produced across four years. Included in the show are botanical images of plants in fields of layered grass or in colourful pots; drawings featuring a range of everyday contemporary and traditional objects; and landscapes picturing the rocky northern terrain around Cape Dorset where the artist lives. Each image in the series demonstrates Samayualie’s precise drawing style and approach to perspective and graphic form.

Nicotye Samayualie was born in 1983 in Kinngait. Her grandmother was Keeleemeeoome Samayualie, a well-known graphic artist whose images were included in the Cape Dorset annual print collections throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Fascinated by the patterns found in nature and on man-made objects, Samayualie has developed an artistic vision that engages with a formalized everyday to exploit fully the possibilities of graphic expression.
