Birds Birds Birds: Sculpture
With the arrival of spring, we are pleased to present a profile featuring a selection of sculptures depicting a multitude of birds and bird forms. An integral feature of the northern ecology, birds occupy an important place in Inuit culture, sharing the Arctic landscape with its human and animal occupants. Encompassing works by artists from several different communities and settlements, the selection illustrates the diversity of approaches that Inuit sculptors have used to represent birds, ranging from stylized abstractions to highly detailed naturalistic renderings. Included are images of owls, geese, gulls, ducks, ravens and creatures with transformational connotations. By turns stolid and dynamic, collectively these modestly scaled pieces reflect their authors’ profound knowledge of the natural world.
