Profile: Sculptures from Private Collections

June 9 – 30, 2023

Marion Scott Gallery is pleased to present an online profile featuring a wide selection of Inuit sculptures, many of which have never been seen or exhibited publicly before. Drawn exclusively from private collections, the profile showcases work originating in Inuit communities throughout the Arctic region, including Arviat, Naujaat (Repulse Bay), Kinngait (Cape Dorset), Qamani’tuaq (Baker Lake), Puvirnituq, and Greenland.

The large selection is composed of earlier works created in the 1960s through to the 1990s in a variety of scales and mediums, from larger, robust stone sculptures to delicately carved smaller pieces in walrus ivory and whale tooth. While some works conduct focused explorations of singular subject matter, such as owls and birds, others present intricate compositional arrangements, depicting hunting scenes and human and animal interactions. All together, the selection reflects the dynamic and diverse nature of Inuit sculptural expressions from the modern era, with stylistic choices and techniques ranging from the highly minimalist and abstract to more figurative, representational approaches.
