Shuvinai Ashoona: Drawings 1993 – 2007

Shuvinai Ashoona was born in 1961 in Kinngait, Nunavut and is famed Inuit graphic artist Pitseolak Ashoona’s
granddaughter. She began drawing for the West Baffin Eskimo Cooperative in 1993 and has continued to draw
ever since. This exhibition is Shuvinai’s first solo show with MSG (she was also featured in Landscape in 2006), and is by no means a true retrospective. The images do cover the entirety of her career, and highlight her progression from simple ink drawings of the landscape near Kinngait through a darker period featuring monsters and strange landscapes to the current images which show life in the modern North with all its own terrors and demons.
