Shuvinai Ashoona: Pop-Up

December 2 – 16, 2023

For those who were unable to visit our recent presentation of Shuvinai Ashoona’s drawings and prints at Art Toronto, we will be featuring more of the artist’s work in the gallery for a limited two-week period. Our very first onsite pop-up will include a new installment of Inside the Mountain, Ashoona’s popular series of hand-coloured lithographs. Also included will be a diverse selection of some of the artist’s most inventive drawings.

By turns uncanny, comical and disquieting, Shuvinai Ashoona’s idiosyncratic dream-like imagery erases distinctions between the natural and spirit worlds, and between the real and the imagined. Many of her images feature fantastical monster-like creatures, while others portray people and planets orbited by a range of beings such as fish and walruses. Known for her aerial perspectives and cropped compositions, Ashoona’s carefully executed drawings and prints are often marked by a filmic sensibility. Ashoona’s works are included in several prominent institutional collections, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Vancouver Art Gallery, ICA Miami and the Tate. Ashoona lives and works in Kinngait, Nunavut.
