Sneja Gunew: Collecting Women’s Art

January 13 – February 3, 2024

Marion Scott Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition featuring Inuit works in various media from the collection of Sneja Gunew. A widely published scholar with a specialty in feminist critical theory, Professor Gunew has been a passionate collector of art by women from different cultures and regions of the world. This exhibition, our first of 2024, brings together 14 works by nine Inuit women artists, including sculptures, textiles and graphics. The exhibition features several sculptures by the late Kinngait carver Oviloo Tunnillie, an artist Gunew was especially interested in. Many of the works are devoted to the theme of Sedna, or Nuliajuk, the legendary Inuit sea goddess whose powers are both feared and admired by Inuit living in regions across Nunavut. The exhibition includes works by Rachel Aliktiluk, Kenojuak Ashevak, Irene Avaalaaqiaq, Janet Kigusiuq, Ningeokuluk Teevee, Oviloo Tunnillie, and others.

Sneja Gunew: Collecting Women’s Art is the first in a series of three exhibitions centring on women’s art.
