Profile: Spirit Matter

Feb 19 – March 6

We are pleased to present Spirit Matter, our first profile of 2026. Featuring 12 sculptures dating from 1950 to 1980, the profile highlights the relationship between the material used by Inuit sculptors and the subjects they choose to render. Whether the sculptures are shaped from organic materials such as bone and antler, or whether they are carved from geologic matter (stone), the forms exude a presence that is separate from—but inevitably linked to—the animals and figures they depict. Several of the sculptures in the profile portray openly spiritual subjects such as shamans and transforming animals. Other works depict worldly subjects such as clothed human figures and graceful animals. All the works are imbued with an energy that belies their modest scales.
