The Coppenrath Collection
Montréal-based collectors Jane and Robert Coppenrath began acquiring sculptures by Inuit artists in the 1990s, adding to their already substantial collections of modern painting and African art. Working closely with a small number of dealers across Canada, they assembled a large collection of classic pieces dating from the early 1950s through the 1970s. With a preference for early works from northern Quebec and the Kivalliq region to the west of Hudson Bay, they built a focussed collection of exceptionally high quality. Many of the works they acquired represent woman and family, themes that were of special importance to them.
Robert Coppenrath passed away in 2017, and Jane passed away earlier this year. Marion Scott Gallery is honoured to be working with their family and estate to share their impressive collection with the public. Opening December 5 and continuing through January 23, the exhibition features works by over 30 different Inuit artists, including Eva Talooki Aliktiluk, Samwillie Amidlak, Barnabus Arnasungaaq, Tuna Iquliq, John Kavik, Dominic Kingilik, John Pangnark, George Tataniq and Lucy Tasseor Tutsweetok. The exhibition will be open by appointment and will have an expanded online dimension, with VR 3-d tours of the installation, videos, and an accompanying essay.
