The Reinhard Derreth Collection
June 11 – July 16
Over a period of nearly 50 years, West Vancouver resident Reinhard Derreth assembled a collection of more than 70 works by Inuit artists in a variety of media. A graphic designer who helped produced exhibition catalogues and publications on some of the leading Indigenous and non-Indigenous contemporary artists of 1970s,1980s and 1990s, Derreth has been a collector of many styles of modern Canadian art. His Inuit collection began in 1963 with his first acquisition, a mythic owl creature from Kinngait (Cape Dorset) purchased from Vancouver’s New Design Gallery, and over the years has grown to encompass sculptures, prints, drawings and textiles. This exhibition features highlights from this impressive yet modestly scaled collection, and includes works by Latcholassie Akesuk, Luke Anguhadluq, Barnabus Arnasungaaq, Elizabeth Nutaraaluk, Jessie Oonark, Lukta Qiatsuk, Miriam Qiyuk, Abraham Apakark Angnik Ruben, Marion Tuu’luq, Oviloo Tunnillie and others.
