Profile: Arviat Small-Scale

Our first profile of 2024 features small scale sculptures from Arviat. Situated on the western shore of Hudson Bay in Nunavut, Arviat has been home to some of the North’s most original sculptural art in the modern period. The remote community’s artists are especially known for their abstract interpretations of human and animal forms, formed out of the region’s distinctive grey and black stone. Although the artists infuse their images with their own individual minimalist sensibilities and distinctive approaches, these elemental works all share a common concern for exploring the relationship between the people and the land that sustains them. Included are works by Andy Miki, Elizabeth Nutaraaluk, John Pangnark, Eva Talooki, and Lucy Tasseor.
