Shuvinai Ashoona: A For Sure World reviewed in Galleries West

January 2, 2018

In her review of Shuvinai Ashoona: A For Sure World for Galleries West, Beverly Cramp praises the aritst’s work, calling the show “an intriguing way to experience the mysteries of Ashoona’s North.” Describing Ashoona’s expression as “surreal, dream-like, spiritual and shrewdly insightful,” Cramp highlights the artist’s complex relationship to her subject matter, drawing attention to an approach that is “amusing but pointed, even tragic.” Ashoona’s new large scale works in oil stick are singled out for special praise. Cramp writes that looking at Aquarium (2017) “is like being immersed in a lush commercial tank populated by an orange octopus-like creature and a bright red fish with a flowing tail. Oddly, there’s a seal in one corner.”
