Six works from Jut-ke-Nay Hazel Wilson’s epic series of Haida history robes are featured in Empowering Art: Indigenous Creativity and Activism from North America’s Northwest Coast, on view at the Sainsbury Centre, Norwich, UK until July 30th. The ground breaking exhibition brings together a range of contemporary and historical works from the Pacific Northwest, on a scale not seen in the UK since the 1970s. The exhibition examines the contested past within the context of the realities of the colonial present, with a special focus on the British involvement in the region in the late 1700s and 1800s. The exhibition also includes works by Lawrence Paul Yuxwelupton, Marianne Nicolson and Susan Point, among others. This is the first time Wilson’s robes have been shown in the UK.
