Qamani’tuaq-based textile artist Janet Arjaut Nungnik has been longlisted for the 2026 Sobey Art Award, one of Canada’s most influential art prizes. Nungnik has been selected by the jury for the Circumpolar region, one of 6 regions represented by the Award.
Working primarily in embroidery, appliqué and beadwork on duffel, Nungnik creates vibrant wallhangings that express her recollections of life on the land, the transition to settled community and the pressing issues of our time including climate change.
The Sobey Art Award is given annually to recognize, support and help propel Canadian artists on the national and global stages. Founded in 2002, the prize is funded by the Sobey Art Foundation and organized and presented by the National Gallery of Canada. Previous SAA recipients include Annie Pootoogook (2006), Laakkuluk Williamson (2021) and Kablusiak (2023).
