McMichael Canadian Art Collection Acquires an Important Work by Elizabeth Nutaraaluk

April 1, 2026

The McMichael Canadian Art Collection has acquired an important stone and caribou antler sculpture by Elizabeth Nutaraaluk Aulatjut (1914-1999). Untitled (Face) dates from the mid 1980s and belongs to what is commonly referred to as the artist’s middle period. The inclusion of caribou antler inlay to denote eyes and teeth exemplifies Nutaraaluk’s mixed media approach during this important phase. While the late Arviat artist never gave titles to her works, it is believed that most—if not all—of her sculptures of faces are self-portraits.

Elizabeth Nutaraaluk Aulatjut (1914-1999), Untitled (face), ca. 1985, Stone, caribou antler, 11.25 x 10 x 2 in.
