Shuvinai Ashoona in Art Review

February 25, 2024

Shuvinai Ashoona’s show When I Draw at the Perimeter in London has been reviewed yet again, this time by Salena Barry in Art Review. Barry first explores Ashoona’s history, her upbringing in Kinngait, one of Canada’s most prolific artistic community, and how her drawings explore aspects of life as a Kinngait local. Barry frames the work in the context of colonialism and the climate crisis – likening Ashoona’s many globes, mystical creatures, and domestic scenes to the relationship humans have to the Anthropocene and the ineffable complexities therein. The article ends by referencing Inuk writer and creative Tanya Tagaq, highlighting the similarities in their commentary in the interconnectedness of nature and man.
